Our Awesome Team
Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Annkristin Heine
Lab head
Anna is deputy clinical director of the Medical Clinic III for Hematology, Oncology, Immune-Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Rheumatology at the University Hospital Bonn. Prior to that, she studied medicine in Tübingen, Bordeaux, Davos, and New York and worked as a hematologist/oncologist at the University Hospital Freiburg. Clinically, she focuses on the treatment of lymphoid malignancies and tumor immunotherapy. In her research, she has a special interest in immune cell cross-talk, especially dendritic cells and T cells. She has spent her post-doc time in Christian Kurt’s lab at the Institute of Experimental Immunology learning basic immunology from the bottom up and studying the role of distinct chemokines in cross-priming. She now aims to decipher the mechanisms that drive immune-related adverse events after immune checkpoint inhibitor blockade and Graft-versus-Host disease. Anna strives for a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying resistance to immunotherapy, the identification of novel biomarkers, and the immunomodulatory effects of new anti-tumor treatments. As co-speaker of the advanced clinician scientist program ACCENT in Bonn, she always tries to motivate young doctors and PhD students to dive into the incredible world of science. In her free time, she likes running, swimming, skiing and being incredibly amused by the behaviour of her three little kids.
Chrystel Flores
Lab technician
Chrystel has been working as a technician with Anna since the starting year of the Heine Lab. With a broad spectrum of methods like cell culture, cultivation of immune cells, PCR, and flow cytometry she loves everything that has to be pipetted and incubated. With her geeky pedantry, she keeps a cool head about the ordering and organization of the Heine lab and is always happy to accept new challenges. Although she is the smallest one in our group (1.48m!), she tackles the biggest tasks.
Gina Gerhorst
PhD student
Gina did her bachelor’s in „Medical Biology“, and her master’s in „Biomedical Sciences“ at the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, with research stays in Düsseldorf and Milan. She joined the Heine Lab in 2020 as a PhD student and investigates the immunoregulatory effects of novel anti-lymphoma treatments on immune cells. She mainly focuses on human immune cells from healthy donors and patients with hematological malignancies, with only rare visits to the mouse lab. In her free time, you can find her in the Mediterranean region, searching for shells on the beach.
Hendrik Gerritzen
Medical student
Hendrik is currently studying medicine and joined the lab for his doctoral thesis in 2022. Here, he discovered his love for translational research and is already a whole-hearted scientist. He investigates different leukemia treatments and their influence on immune cells. When he is not in the lab – which rarely happens – he establishes new protocols for the perfect cup of coffee.
Hena Hadzmugiazic
Master student/Research assistant
Hena is a „Medical Immunosciences and Infection“ Master’s student, working as a student assistant in our lab as part of the Immunosensation Mentorship Program. She is from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics from Sapienza University of Rome. In the lab, she helps out PhD students with their projects and learns various techniques from them. In her free time, she likes reading, doing yoga, going to the gym, baking and travelling.
Dr. med. Tessa Hattenhauer
Clinician Scientist
Tessa works as a resident doctor in the department of Oncology, Hematology, Rheumatology and Immune-Oncology of the University Hospital Bonn. Her research focuses on response prediction markers for immunotherapy in cancer treatment and factors influencing the efficacy of this therapy.
Michelle Klesse
PhD student
Michelle did both their undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Bonn, specializing in the field of immunology early on. Their studies included excursions to labs in Adelaide, Australia, and Munich, Germany. However, Michelle decided to stay true to their roots and returned to Bonn to pursue their PhD. They are now working to decipher the role of the innate immune system, esp. neutrophils and eosinophils, in murine acute Graft-versus-Host Disease. If they are not climbing the proverbial mountain that is their PhD, they are probably off conquering some actual mountains. They also enjoy singing at the top of their lungs both inside and outside of their shower and secretly dream of becoming the next Beyoncé.
Nils Kosiol
PhD student
Nils studied biology here in Bonn and joined the Heine Lab in 2019 as a PhD student. When he’s not writing a new R script but is actually working in the lab, he investigates a potential new strategy to overcome resistance to checkpoint inhibition in a mouse melanoma model. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his kids or is busy planning the doom of his enemies in grand strategy games.
Rebecca Linke
PhD student
Rebecca did her Master’s in „Medical Immunosciences and Infection“ at the University of Bonn. In 2021, she joined our lab as a Bonn-Melbourne IRTG2168 PhD student (In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Katrin Paeschke). Her PhD project mainly focuses on the role of G-quadruplex (G4) formation in dendritic cells and how G4 formation could be used to support current immunotherapeutic approaches.
Luisa Marques Palma
PhD student
Luisa studied biology in Ulm and Tübingen focusing on molecular cell biology and immunology. After a stint in industry, she joined the research group in March 2022. Her work focuses on the mechanisms behind immune-mediated side effects in immunotherapy. In her free time, Luisa can be found drinking coffee, reading a book, or – in true Swabian fashion – attending concerts and events.
Dr. med. Rebekka Mispelbaum
Clinician Scientist
Rebekka is a resident doctor in the department of Oncology, Hematology, Rheumatology, and Immune-Oncology, University Hospital Bonn. Within her research, she tries to investigate how to predict and influence the response to and side effects of immunotherapy in patients with solid malignant tumors. She was recently selected for the BONFOR funding program.
Alea Radcke
PhD student
Alea did her master’s in „Medical Immunosciences and Infection“ and is currently doing her PhD in the Bonn-Melbourne IRTG2168 program (in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Katrin Paeschke). In 2021, she joined the lab for her bachelor thesis and did not want to leave. Since then, she has been a research assistant and focuses on DNA modifications and myeloid cells. Besides her studies and work, she likes running and travelling.
Dr. rer. nat. Oliver Schanz
Post Doc
Oli received his PhD in environmental immunology here in Bonn in 2018 in the group of Irmgard Förster and has known Anna since 2010, when both of them were working at the IMMEI and didn’t even know how to hold a pipet. He joined the Medical Clinic III in 2018 and Anna’s team at the beginning of 2021. He has long-standing experience in T cell immunology and enjoys dissecting the interplay of environmental stimuli, microbiota and the immune system. Currently, he is doing that in the context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and Graft-versus-Host disease. He mostly spends his free time with his kids or touring around Bonn with his gravel bike.
Dr. med. Sebastian Schlaweck
Clinician Scientist/Post Doc
Sebastian joined the Heine Lab in 2016. Meanwhile, he has become a specialist in hematology/oncology. He is passionate about studying cellular therapies and their side effects. He focuses on Graft-versus-Host disease and how T cell responses can be modified. Outside the lab, he loves trying out new recipes in the kitchen and listening to good music.
